Biologypersonalstatement
SinceaslongagoasIcanrememberIhavealwaysbeenfascinatedbythenaturalworld.Thatchildishfascinationhasnotleftmebutdeepenedovertheyears.Thisinteresthasledmetomyloveofbiology,ecology,animalbehaviourandevolution.
FollowingmygraduationfromHighSchoolIstudiedBiologicalSciencesfortwoyearsattheCatholicUniversityofChileinSantiago.FromMarch1997toNovember1998Iwasobligedtotakeabreakfrommystudiesatuniversityasmyfatherwasmovingfromthecitytoamoreremoteruralarea.WhilehelpingmyfatherIwasabletoworkcloselywithbirdsofpreyamongothersandIwassuccessfulinbreedingtheendangeredchinchillas.DuringmytimeawayfromuniversityIcontinuedtodeepenmyknowledgeofmysubjectandstudiedevolutionarythinkingandthebiologicalbasisofbehaviour.IalsoworkedforabrieftimeasatranslatorwhichmademethinkthatperhapsmyEnglishwasgoodenoughocompletemystudiesinanEnglishspeakingcountry.
SincecomingtoOxfordandstudyingatOLTIhaveimprovedmywrittenEnglishagreatdeal.IamamemberofTheNaturalHistoryMuseum(London)andrecentlyattendedacoursecalled’TheHistoryofEvolution’.ThecoursewasorganisedbyBirkbeckCollegeandtookplaceattheNaturalHistorymuseuminLondoneachWednesday.ThecoursehasbeenfascinatingandhasservedtoconfirmmysuspicionthatthemoreIlearnofthissubjectthemoreIwanttoknow.
IamhopefulthatmypreviousstudiesinSantiago,mymaturityandmyexperienceinthisfieldwillallowmetoenterthesecondyearofanundergraduateprogrammeintheUK.Aftercompletingmyundergraduateitismywishtocontinuestudyingatpostgraduatelevelandultimatelyconductmyownresearchinthisarea.
Myotheracademicinterestsinclude,Paleoanthropology,andthehistoryanddevelopmentofscience.IammostinterestedinthewritingsofDarwinandThomasandHenryHuxley.
Iamkeenonfitnesstraining,horseriding,trekkinganddiving.Iammostinterestedinalloutdoorpursuits.Iamalsokeentodevelopmynewlyfoundskillsinclassicalsinginganddance.
Irealisethatasanon-nativestudentIwillberequiredtoworkharderthanmycontemporariesandIampreparedtodothat.Ihaveacheerfulandopen-mindeddispositionandlookforwardtosharingandexploringnewideas.
