SincemyearlyteenageyearsIhavehadastronginterestintheworldthatIlivein;wantingtounderstandwheremineandothers’placescanbeandareinsociety;notjustlocallybutglobally,soIfollowcurrentaffairsprogrammesonthetelevisionandreadnewspapersandjournals,suchasthe‘Economist’,withinterest.However,Iwishtoexplorefurtherthecausesandeffectsofhumaninteractions.Thestudyofeconomicsandpoliticsprovidesexplanationsandpredictions,aswellasmoreuniversaltheories,whichunderliehumanbehaviour,aswellasofferinginsightintothevalidityofthevariouspoliticalchoicescompetingforourfavour.

ThesubjectsIamstudyingatALevelprovideagoodgroundinginskillsandknowledgeforthesetwointerrelateddisciplines.EnglishLanguageensuresthatIcananalyse,andcommunicateclearlyandeffectively,inboththespokenandwrittenmode.History–thestudyofthepastanditsimplications–ismostvaluableasitprovidesresearchskillsandimprovesmyessaywriting,asdoesPsychologywhichalsogivessomeinsightsintohowourmindsvariouslyfunction.Physicsdevelopsexperimentaland–alongwithMathematics–analyticalandproblemsolvingskills,aswellasensuringmyabilitieshavebreadth.Iammostenthusiasticattheprospectofhavingmyabilitiesstretchedandraisedtoamuchhigherstandard,especiallyasIhavenotstudiedeconomicsorpoliticsbefore.BytheendofmydegreecourseIalsoexpecttobeamoreastute,matureperson;Ishallcertainlytakeadvantageofallthevarioussocialandsportingopportunitiesyouruniversityoffers.ItismycurrentcareerambitiontohaveajobinprofessionalpoliticsasanMP,toplayapartinnationalpolicymakingandlegislation,aswellasexperiencingtheprideofbeingademocraticrepresentativeofthepeople.Thisambitionflowsfrommyconcernforthewellbeingofothersandthecontinuedfreedomofourpeople.Yourdegreecourseisidealpreparationforthiscareerbecauseitwillimparttheknowledgenecessaryforinformedpolicyformation,andtheskills–suchasgoodcommunicationandeffectivedebating–neededtosucceedinthiscompetitiveoccupation.IamamemberoftheConservativepartyandfollowtheirpolicyreformationafter1997withinterest.Currentlymyotherinterestsincludescienceandtechnology–Ienjoyreadingthe‘NewScientist’journal,forinstance–aswellascomputers,ofwhichIregardmyselfasanadvanceduser.Forexample,IusetheInternetforstudyandresearchintoareasofinterest,suchascommentongovernmentpolicydecisions,andupgradinghardwaremyself.Also,lastyearIhada3Dcomputergame‘add-on’–designedbymyselfoveralengthyperiod,teachingmyselfagreatnumberofskillsinthisfield–packagedonanumberofinternationalmagazines,includingtheUK-based‘PCGamer’.IalsoenjoywalkingwithmyfamilyandourdogsintheDorsetcountryside,andamamemberoftheVeganSociety.
