TherouterunsfromtheAtlantictothePacificthroughtheArcticarchipelago.EuropeanexplorerssoughtthepassageasashorterroutetoAsia,butfounditrenderedinhospitablebyiceandweather.

"ThisistrulyahistoricmomentforCanada,"saidHarper,whowasbeaming,uncharacteristically."ThishasbeenagreatCanadianstoryandmysteryandthesubjectofscientists,historians,writersandsingerssoIthinkwereallyhaveanimportantdayinmappingthehistoryofourcountry."

Harper'sgovernmentbegansearchingforFranklin'sshipsasitlookedtoassertCanada'ssovereigntyovertheNorthwestPassage,wheremeltingArcticicehasunlockedtheveryshippingrouteFranklinwasafter.

TheoriginalsearchfortheshipshelpedopenuppartsoftheCanadianArcticfordiscoverybackinthe1850s.HarpersaidtheshipwasfoundSundayusingaremotelyoperatedunderwatervehicle.ThediscoverycomesshortlyafterateamofarcheologistsfoundatinyfragmentfromtheFranklinexpedition.Searchersdiscoveredanironfittingthatoncehelpedsupportaboatfromoneofthedoomedexpedition'sshipsintheKingWilliamIslandsearcharea.

Franklin'svesselsareamongthemostsought-afterprizesinmarinearchaeology.HarpersaidthediscoverywouldshedlightonwhathappenedtoFranklin'screw.

Tantalizingtraceshavebeenfoundovertheyears,includingthebodiesofthreecrewmendiscoveredinthe1980s.

ThebodiesoftwoEnglishseamen-JohnHartnell,25,andRoyalMarineWilliamBraine,33-wereexhumedin1986.Anexpeditionuncoveredtheperfectlypreservedremainsofapettyofficer,JohnTorrington,20,inanice-filledcoffinin1984.
