TheoriginalsearchfortheshipshelpedopenuppartsoftheCanadianArcticfordiscoverybackinthe1850s.HarpersaidtheshipwasfoundSundayusingaremotelyoperatedunderwatervehicle.ThediscoverycomesshortlyafterateamofarcheologistsfoundatinyfragmentfromtheFranklinexpedition.Searchersdiscoveredanironfittingthatoncehelpedsupportaboatfromoneofthedoomedexpedition'sshipsintheKingWilliamIslandsearcharea.
Franklin'svesselsareamongthemostsought-afterprizesinmarinearchaeology.HarpersaidthediscoverywouldshedlightonwhathappenedtoFranklin'screw.
Tantalizingtraceshavebeenfoundovertheyears,includingthebodiesofthreecrewmendiscoveredinthe1980s.
